The term auto transformer is a transformer where the input and output is the same winding. This type of transformer has no isolation between the input and the output. The advantage of this type of transformer is that it is able to handle more power then a transformer with two separate windings. The winding is tapped and the input is applied across the whole winding with the output taken off the tap. This produces a reduction in the output voltage. If the input is applied to the tap and the output is taken off the total winding the output voltage will be higher.

You might get a few more correct answers if the question made sense. "Auto" could be in reference to "automatic", the transformer part part would seem to be just that, a transformer set up to provide the needed voltage to begin some kind of operation. Start might be the design function and is just a function command word. That is the best I can do right now with the lack of details that you give. Email me with just what this is in reference to and maybe we can sort out what you want to know.

Autotransformer Starting
Autotransformer starting automatically switching between taps of an autotransformer reduces the voltage, current and torque to the motor according to the tap setting used on the autotransformer. There are two very distinctive characteristics of an autotransformer starter.
1. The motor terminal voltage is not a function of load current and remains constant during the
acceleration time.
2. Due to the turn ratio advantages, the primary line current is less than the secondary motor currents. A three-coil autotransformer is connected in a wye configuration and connected to the motor in such a way as to supply reduced voltage to the motor when the line voltage is applied to the Autotransformer. Several sets of taps are usually available to the user to provide different values of reduced voltage (NEMA standards are 80%, 65% and 50% of the full line voltage).

i found this, but not sure what its ur looking for!

there are some people around here who answers just for the sake of 2 points, rather than giving you a proper answer or helping you to get an answer some people just write something, anything, maybe irrelevant to your question.

I don't have an answer for you because I don't know. This is not my field. Why are the people with your answer not online right now? Who knows?
