I'm just about to graduate with a masters in Mechanical Engineering.

I want, ultimately, to end up in South America, working on something ethically sound - perhaps developmental work, appropriate technology, something like that.

I've found companies that work in energy, some that make the slums permanent living places, but nothing's really jumped out.

Does anyone know of any companies that I can investigate that might be suitable?

(I'm willing to work a few years in the UK first to get experience/qualifications and am most interested in CAD/draughtsman/design-type positions, but am open-minded)

Many thanks..

Properwired: The difference between me and a kid dreaming of being a train driver, however, is that this is a reality. I'm 2 months away from having a degree in it.

As for changing the world.....I never said that that was my aim. I'd be a crap politician, anyway - just want to make a difference in the area I'm best at.

I asked because although I can do any amount of research, ultimately others' experiences are more valuable.

I am assuming that you are doing your masters straight after your degree. If that is the case then you need to get some practical experience first. After you have gained some experience then you may be in a better position to decide which company is suitable. Also you need experience to offer companies - not just qualifications. I think that opting to do CAD is a serious waste of your qualification - you should be looking at maintaining & fabricating systems - you must do your practical work first before you consider design work.
You can also contact the VSO - which is an organisation that puts proffessional people in projects to help the communities around the world - especially in developing countries. The positions are voluntary with just your travel & living costs covered.
I agree you need to have an open mind - trying to find a job in South America that is 'ethically sound' is very commendable of you but also paradoxical. Your aim should be to gain good experience in a related industry so that you can pass on skills/ideas/experience to people in developing countries and to attain a position whereby you can improve their working conditions (fair wages and suitable work equipment).

Sorry I'm not a mechanical engineering or know that much about South America for that matter, I was thinking to say something like it might be better to wait and get training so that you could really help them, but I don't even really know what they would need in the way of help, you will need someone that can tell you. So I will just say good to you.

Make babysitting flyers employing the pc and positioned them in the library, human beings's mailboxes, and grocery shops. Drum up extra employer and shop a laptop to time table once you do get a customer. Culver's minimum hiring age is 14 with a workers enable. I referred to as many shops using fact i'm 14 searching for a job. This become the reaction they gave which makes me satisfied after searching for see you later. come across an area one go browsing and word and go in shop to word or call and ask in the event that they are hiring. What I did become Google a gaggle of employer close to my abode and found their numbers employing Google maps or their web pages and that i referred to as and straight away asked in the event that they are hiring and what age do they hire at. try community grocery shops, pizza parlors, retail shops, speedy nutrition eating places.

Sounds silly to me are you young as your comments seem very childish almost like kids wanting to be train drivers or spacemen or nurses and models. If you want a job that changes the world go into politics and fight for people to claim back power from the dictatorship we call democracy
