My school told me to never write on the back of a sheet of paper instead I have to get a new one.I don't think that is a smart thing to do.I think I should just write on the back of the sheet of paper rather than wasting a new one.I feel like they should just let me write on the back.

Sometimes when you write on the back of a paper, it bleeds through to the other side. And if you are using pencil, sometimes it rubs on the opposite sheet and makes smudges. So, to keep your school happy, do it their way. The teachers can read better, and won't miss your back-of-the-page essay bits.

However, when term is over, take it home and use it for scratch paper. Or recycle it all.

Do ask if you can use the back of the paper, but if they say no, don't be a nag about it -- unless you can't afford the paper, or have an environmental belief. Maybe you can hand your "paper" in on computer disks if you really don't want to use up the paper. It *is* important to try to change the system, but realize, the system sometimes has good reasons for keeping things the same. If you can find out "why" they don't want you to write on the back, maybe you can offer them some smart alternatives.

Good luck!

Me again, just so others know my thoughts on it....
I'll have to agree with you on that. I really don't know why some instructors have that rule. It's not like it is some important legal document. You are right, it is just a waste of paper and with the need for conservation and recycling it would make more sense to use both sides. I doubt you will be able to change their rule, but you make more sense than they do. If you do find out why, I'm curious to know, so please e-mail and tell me.
I was a teacher, never had that rule and know no logical reason for it .

Ask your teacher what the reasoning is. But be sure to ask the question in a nonconfrontational manner. As an environmental science teacher, I use the back of every paper. A very good habit, in general. But sometimes we have to conform to what someone else requires. Judge for yourself what you must do.
