Great question. Because driver needs vary on circumstance, I would suggest a cross over vehicle. Chrysler Pacifica, Chevy HHR are good examples. You get the best of both worlds. You could also go for an all wheel drive sedan, Audi, BMW offer my favorites.

well the real question is what will you use the car 4?
first you ahve to remember the disadvantages and advantages of either car, which go sumthen like this
//SUV//
Adv: lots of room, high driving position, which may make it easier for you to drive, usually some form of off-road ability, looks, additional seats (ie 5-8 seats over a sedan's 5)
Dis:Fuel economy takes a wacking, and is usually much worse than any sedan; in most cases dynamics are also worse than a sedan, and many sedans these days have a high-level of athleticsism
//Sedan//
Adv: lower fuel economy (usually): of course, a V8 sedan will have worse figures than say a CR-V, because that contains a 4-cyl; improved dynamics over SUV; lower price; easier to drive+park, could look better
Dis: less seating: almost all sedans have 5 seats, so if you need more than this, a sedan will be no good to you; smaller boot-especially many US sedans; can be cramped for taller people
it depends what you need this car for. high-passenge/luggage loads? towing a boat or caravan? off-roading? SUV would suit you
otherwise a sedan will do what you need for day-2-day needs

For most people, a sedan. If you live out of town, in a bad climate or need to tow a trailer then a suv is for you.

Do you have kids? Do you tow? Do you go drive off road? Do you work/ play in the great outdoors? a Suv is good for all those things, including safety in a crash, But a sedan is cheap to fill up at the gas pump

If fuel economy doesn't matter, I'd get the SUV. Most people won't need it most of the time, but when you do, you'll be glad you have it. A lot of people who own an SUV also own a little car for this reason.
