The dead sea is called "dead" because the high salt content does not support a great variety of life.
Bodies don't turn black, but they float better!
It is considered healthful - like soaking a swollen foot in Epsom salts.

The Dead Sea is in Israel and I think other Arabic countries have borders on it. It is really a lake. Streams flow in but nothing flows out. The sun is hot round those parts so there is a lot of evaporation. Natch, all the minerals and salts in the water stay behind when the water evaporates, with the result that more and more salts and minerals come into the Dead Sea, and stay there.
This has made the Dead Sea a LOT LOT saltier than ordinary sea water. In sea water you float more easily, and the minerals in the water are good for your skin and such. This goes extra for the Dead Sea, where you can sleep while floating (it being a big lake there are no waves). Many people believe it is extra good for your skin and body, and go there specially to soak. There are companies that dredge the Dead Sea to dredge the minerals off the bottom.
The water in the Dead Sea is as saturated with salty minerals as it can be. Now, the extra minerals that come in vea streams precipitate out and go to the bottom. You can do this at home. Just get a glass of pure water and dissolve salt in it (keep track of how much salt you are using). Eventually, the water gets as salty as it's going to get, and any extra just piles up on the bottom.
Your body floats better in salty water, and it is easier to swim, because the water is denser. But in cold weather, salty water is colder than fresh, and salty water will remain liquid at temperatures where fresh water freezes.
It's called the Dead Sea because it's so salty that nothing can live in it. Of course it was named before the tourist industry became a big money-spinner. Were it being renamed now, by the real estate people, it would probably be called "Niche Bay, or Charmhaven Cove, or such.
Oh, and no you don't turn black, tho' you can get VERY VERY wrinkly.

No, people don't turn black in the Dead Sea.
The Dead Sea is actually a big lake in the central-eastern part of Israel, right next to the Judean desert. It borders Jordan, and so the area is held by both countries (Israel rules the western shore and Jordan the eastern shore).
The Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth (417 meters under sea level) and got its name for the huge amounts of salts and minerals that are in it (34% salt)- the water are so salty that no living creature can live there (there are no fish and crabs in the Dead sea).
Due to its great amounts of salts, heavy object can easily float at it (in fact- you cannot dive in the Dead Sea), and you probably know the pictures of people floating on their back reading news-papers…
The mud on the bottom of the Dead Sea (that is black) is full with minerals and has a positive influence on your skin, so many people spread it on their body and wash it in the water after it gets dry and cracked.

The black is from the Dead Sea mud that many people apply to themselves. It is rich in minerals, and is considered very healthy to apply to the skin. If you aren't interested in coating yourself in mud, then you don't have to and you won't turn black. The most interesting thing about the Dead Sea is that you cannot sink, no matter how hard you try.

no of course not...the dead sea doesnt kill people. The dead sea is actually a large lake with a tremendous amount of salt in it; so much that no life can survive in it, hence it being called the DEAD sea

Nope, nor do they turn red in the Red Sea. Or Yellow in the Yantze river in china, nor do they turn into turkeys in Turkey. Or red in the Red River. Or chickens in Chicken Alaska. Oh did you know why they called it chicken..Because in the early days of the gold rush they wanted a name for the little town. They wanted to call it Ptarmigan but no one could spell it so they just called it chicken..And they dont come out different colors when they visit the painted desert..

the dead sea is very, verrryyy salty-- the saltiest body of water in the world, i believe. so when ppl go in it, any little scratches will sting because of the large amounts of salt in the water. also, theres high buoyancy in it, so u float!
