Don't know but it used to be by prescription only.
Try the Aleve website, or in your search box type in "Aleve was created in" If you type it just like that with the parentheses it will only bring up websites with that exact phrase.

Aleve was introduced in June 1994. I could not find a date that it was created. It looks like it has been around for a while as a prescribed drug.

Aleve has been around since 1994...it is over the counter Naprosyn which is an anti-inflammatory
