so, i received this call from the CA and he told me that I owed 17,332.00 for student loans from 2006 and that they were going to take my taxes (which I already got back, hah!) my problem with this is that my loans all originated in 2001 (when i started college) and they were in my mothers name. i called her to ask her if she knew anything about it, and she said that even if they WERE my loans, that there was no way they would equal 17,000 (even with added fees).... i called the CA back and asked for them to find out if they were my original loans, and when they had been put into my name (rather than my mothers). she told me that she still pays on my student loans monthly.... they have no idea and claim that i must have "other student loans i didn't know about". has anyone been through this?

Be careful in this area. As you've probably heard them say anything you disclose they will use in an attempt to collect. Also some companies have been known to use collections as a front for identity theft.

Before asking them for more information I would check your loan details that the Dept. of Education has on file. They keep it all in a system called NSLDS (National Student Loan Database System), if you don't have access call a DoE lender and they'll look it up for you (I work for a lender: Student Aid Lending so can do it for you if you'd like). This system will also show you if you or your mother is behind on payments.

If it's determined that you are in collections the easiest way out is to make arrangements with your servicer or lender to get back on track with payments (not necessarily the CA). If you can make these arrangements after showing a track record of on time payments they will work with you to put you back into a good credit standing.

Good Luck!

You need to make sure that ALL The loans were in your mother's name, because students can take out loans in their own name while attending college fairly easily. This sounds a little like identity theft, which would mean you have a long road ahead of you repairing this. Hopefully you or your mother kept all the original paperwork from your loans, and you need to have them fax or mail copies of your loan information including the lender(s), and loan processing companies. Also get the dates the loans originited, accout numbers, loan amounts, etc. Next, match the loan amounts with those your mother has been paying, and make sure that those payments are being credited towards your account. If there are other accounts/amounts, determine if you took them out and "mistoke" them for financial aid or something. If these loans did not originate with you, tell the loan processing company immediately. They will be able to help you further in clearing up your name.

I hate stupid prank calls. the best one I have been given had to be whilst my buddy pranked me. She knows me fairly nicely, and suggested she ought to work out the place i became into, and that i asked her the place i became into then, and she or he replied wisely, and instructed me what i became into doing. Then she instructed me what i became into donning (she had seen me earlier on that day). by using this time i became into getting rather freaked out! She then instructed me to look out for a pink motor vehicle, that it became into her using away, and beneficial sufficient a jiffy later a pink motor vehicle drove by using, purely out of twist of fate! i did not locate out it became into her until approximately 3 days later!!
