My husband has been taking 875 mg Augmentin 2x daily for 7 days and today he developed diarrhea. I know that he should continue taking the antibiotic (for strep throat) but should he cut back to once a day? I also read that acidophilus may help with the diarrehea. Is this true? He doesn't feel like it's the stomach flu, we are quessing it is from the antibiotic. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Augmentin is amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. I believe it is the clavulanic acid part that causes the diarrhea. He should definitely not reduce the dose himself. If he is very uncomfortable, he should contact the doctor. The doctor may change him to another antibiotic, as the other poster said, or even switch to plain amoxicillin (without the clavulanic acid). I hope he feels better soon.

Antibiotics such as amoxicillin, augmentin and cipro (penicillin derivatives) are also responsible for killing healthy vaginal bacteria, ensuing yeast infections on the vagina.

Some penicillin-based drugs will cause a thirsty type of headache. One example is amoxicillin-clavulic acid which is a combination drug sometimes used to treat many types of infections from sinusitis to pneumonia to STD's. You may know it by its trade name, Augmentin®. Among many side effects that can occur with the use of Augmentin are headache and increased thirst. Although with many medications, symptoms such as these are trivial, if you experience these side effects after using Augmentin, you should report them immediately to your health care provider.

No don't cut back on the Augmentin. For strep throat it is very important to take the FULL dose and course of antibiotics. The diarrhea if because the antibiotics have killed the natural bacteria in the digestive tract. Products with active cultures can help like yogurt or the acidophilus supplements. He only has a few more days, tough it out.

it used to do that to my son it is the antibiotic and yes acidophiles works either go get it in pill form or powder from health food store or by yogurt with it in it. Pills worked better for my son. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria but the also kill the good and that is what caused diarrhea it is killing the good intestinal bacteria. He can call the Dr and ask for a different antibiotic if the acidophiles doesn't work. then next time he needs antibiotics tell them no augmentin. he should keep taking them till he gets something different but try the acidophiles first.

The main ingredient co-amoxiclav can cause watery stools in some patients. If he's just started taking it and the diarrhea is excessive such that he might get dehydrated, don't cut back on the dosage but rather he should go back to his doctor so that he might possibly have his antibiotics changed.

Generally it isn't prudent to treat a drug-induced illness with another drug, so it's best not to try other medications to self-medicate the diarrhea without medical advise.

No, acidophilus will not help reduce the diarrhea.

I suggest:
1. Follow-up consult with your doctor.
2. Stool exam and culture to rule out other causes of diarrhea
3. Possibly replace antibiotics.
4. do not take ather medications without your doctor's knowledge.
5. stay hydrated. Take lots of water and juices.

It's totally normal. It happened to both of my children when they were prescribed augmentin.

I treated it by feeding them yogurt, applesauce, bananas and rice...all things that help to firm up the stool. Acidophilus might help...the reason pepople take it is because antibiotics will kill off the good bacteria that live in the gut (and in the vagina, that's why women get yeast infections from antibiotics). Probiotics (from the health food store) are more likely to help, but they're probably going to be pretty expensive.

I'm a nurse and yes it is from the antibiotic. Watch out for dehydration so he should drink plenty of fluids. If he feels worse and start showing signs of an allergic reaction discontinue the medicine and see the doctor right away. Take care and I hope he feels better soon

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
