Need more information. White wash do you mean a white wipe, thats were you can see the wood grain, or a solid white color.
Two different methods required. If white wipe, you will need to remove the existing finish coating. You can use a good water base paint remover for this. Non-toxic removers are available today which are easy to use, however can be messy. Need a good space to do this. When the finish coating is removed and the piece is lightly sanded, 200 to 400 grit wet sand paper, you can then stain the wood and refinish with a good urethane/varathane.
If solid color, just purchase a good oil base paint, such as Varathane. It is a good hard finish.

Depending on the sheen you want, satin or semi-gloss, you can go to walmart or a paint store & have them mix up a gallon of base in the sheen you want with a color you pick from their paint chips. Use a good quality brush. I've done this sev. times & have had great results. It lasts for a long time.

Don't go over "beachey" by making everything sea themed. A few subtle hints will do. Choose neutral bedding (tan) and white furniture. Also make sure the blue isn't too teal. Pottery Barn is a great place for furniture.
