I notice from old engravings that in the gothic period there are no pews. When did we start cluttering churches with them?

When we realized that there are people who are unable to stand for lengthy periods of time. Many old churchs have great halls with movable pews. Some have pews only in the front. Older people, or ill people need to sit. It's not clutter.
