Figurative. As Matisse said, a painting is not a representation (that's for photographers) - it's a re-presentation. An insight into the familiar that we haven't seen that way before. That said, no figurative painting can present reality - only an image of it. So every figurative painting is a kind of cipher or symbol; and underlying every good painting there is an abstract, the "bones" supporting composition, movement, etc. Much modern "abstract" seems to me merely an avoidance of real observation - but great abstract reflects great observation. However, I feel a painting should always have the sense of direction communication, and if we see "echoes" of familiar forms etc they (along with the brushwork) humanise the work. As for subject? Anything, everything - a landscape is a portrait; a portrait is a still life. Everything, obvserved is fascinating.

Some abstracts would be nice. They are usually not of any one theme ( like flowers, or tribal, etc) and can be a conversation piece. Every classy person I know has abstracts on their walls- they never go out of style.

I like anything that shows the real skill of the artist-anything realistic. I hate abstract art with a passion because ever since then, art is going downhill.

i like abstract the most because it makes me wondering what is it and translate the picture by what you have seen. different people think different means of the picture.

Are you surprised to see how varied these answers are, Guru? You shouldn't be ;-) There are as many styles of art as there are styles of art lovers. And thank goodness - that means there's something for everyone!
