It should be a mix determined by the crime rate of the community surrounding the school...

Well, first off your last remark may make people wonder if there are enough cops or security around you! I have in-laws that are mexicans and have nothing against mexican, black, white, etc. My opinion about your original question is I don't think there are enough cops or security any where. We do not only need them in the schools we also need them on the streets.

I feel it all depends upon the school and the location. Do we need cops at some back fields school with 200 students?? NO.. Maybe in NYC in a high crime area it is necessary.. I also agree with one statement I just read, it enforces a military state at the schools and they are attempting to develop the minds of younger children at an early age. I feel that is bad, but I'm sure it happens..
To me I honestly feel that if you place cops at schools you are inviting more trouble then it deters. It then becomes a challenge.. Good Question though...

It depends on many factors... here are some.
1) Size
2) Location
3) GDP per capita (per household)
4) ethnic diversity ( I hate to say it; but gangs are found predominately in minorities)
You can find ways to rate the riskiness of violence (riots) and plan a way to do it. The only place I've had security or police (other than college who has their UPD, which is basically security) was when I went to highschool in Paris. There were two police officers with two attack dogs, and this was becaue of threats on US locations abroad, at other points in time there was no "real" security guards who carried any type of protection.
So no, I dont think they are needed at school. Probably just some of them.

I believe that officers of the law are needed in our schools, for the simple fact that our schools are not as safe as they use to be. If there were a bomb threat, or a student with a weapon, I would rather an officer be there to take care of it than a teacher. Our school had a bomb threat and the sent the SCHOOL JANITOR. That had to be the most ignorant thing ever; the man keeps the boiler running, he doesn't defuse explosives.

I think there should be platoons of SuperNannies. With machine guns.
Seriously tho, I think behaviour really improves when you have a good dress code. Uniforms are a good idea. Makes you feel like you really belong, and your behaviour reflects on the school. Also you can use the school tie to hang other students a little bit (but only when they really really need it...

Cops are not needed in schools and the security guards will be sufficient to prevent troubles. However, when there are riots, cops are needed for monitoring and reaction to prevent violence.

I think it depend what kind of school it is and what kind of things are going on. If there are shootings are many fights, there should deff be cops. But if the students are behaving good and it is a safe place to be, I think security guards are enough.

In Oregon we have both. We have a campus monitor, and a school officer that depending on the school is full time at one school, or splits between a few schools. It has worked great.

When I was growing up, the sight of my principal standing in the hall with a paddle was enough to keep things quiet. But they took away capital punishment:( kids think they can get away with anything today
