You can't "make" a cat do too many things, and being affectionate is certainly one of them.

When was her last vet check-up? She may be growling because she's in pain. Or, she may be growling because of some traumatic event (being dropped, falling, being hurt when picked up, being scolded, etc).

Does she go outside? If so, bring her in full time. There is no way to know what is being done to her when she's outside, so be smart and bring her in.

Good luck to you and the kitty. : )

Cats are all different. Some like being held and some would rather come to you on their own terms.

Sit or lay down when you can and let her make the first move if she doesn't seem to like being picked up.

Something may hurt her or be uncomfortable.

My daughter has three cats and they all act different as far as being affectionate. Continue to be very loving and patient. They can make wonderful pets. Most like calm surroundings.

All cats have their own personality. Some want to be talked to more and petted less. Others are lap kitties (want a lot of cuddling), and most are inbetween.

For one thing, stop picking her up. She obviously doesn't like it and it's not comfortable for a cat to be picked up. Maybe when you stop doing that for a while she'll be more affectionate. She probably doesn't want to come to you cause she thinks you'll pick her up.

when you pet her do you feel any fur mats? when the fur mats up and starts pulling on the skin, it causes pain and the cat will growl and hiss and act as you say when being handled, but as the cat still comes to you for affection it shows that she still has an affection nature, she wants to be with you and be loved by you, but it is only safe when you are in bed and arent going to "pick her up"...she IS DEFINITELY experiencing pain somewhere...if not from fur mats then it is inside and she must be examined by a vet. without picking her up, gently feel all over her and see where her reaction is the strongest, this will help you in answering both your question and the vets. good luck.

At this point, I don't think there is much more you can do to make her more affectionate. Cats are fickle like that. They act the way they want to act. I think she just doesn't like to be picked up (like a lot of cats) but feels more comfortable when you guys are in a very non threatening position - like laying down in bed.

just keep petting and loving her. she will become more affectionate as time goes on. what concerns me is that she growls when you pick her up...makes me wonder if her tummy hurts? if you havent already, have her get a physical exam at the vet just to make sure she checks out okay. our pets should have a yearly exam just like we do. Best of luck and enjoy your new furbaby!!
