When I do that, it would just unhighlight itself. If I want to delete something that is highlighted, I'd have to press "del". It didn't used to do this before and now it does. It drives me crazy! How do I change this?

Click on the Tools menu and choose Options. Click on the Edit tab and put a tick mark in front of Typing Replaces Selection. Click OK. This will allow you to use the Backspace key to delete when you select text.

Sorry to assert that it is not a difficulty with note yet you doing the incorrect action! if you're making use of the Backspace then you definately do not spotlight the note first. if you're highlighting the note first then you definately use the "Delete" key.

whats wrong with pressing del instead of backspace.. I use del more often

Some settings of word might be changed. Check on the status bar(the lowermost bar on your screen to see if anything is activated(REC, TRK, EXT, OVR)

If you highlight text then you need to use delete. Backspace you do not need to highlight the text.
