I know that people tend to be selfish and wicked and that unbelievers use it too, so that's not the answer I'm looking for. And you can't say "because real Christians don't sin," because we do.

(As if anybody's coming back to check this)
Men raping their wives, Inquisitioners torturing suspects, Klansmen meeting out God's wrath, and many from the south have met those who will "whup up" on someone who speaks ill of Jesus or Christianity. There are too many examples, and without mentioning the war.
Has this question been done to death? I searched and found no similar questions.
My thinking on the matter is that people who do this are not filtering their interpretation of the Bible through the lens of the Greatest Commandment, which is to love the Lord with all your being and to love your neighbor (enemies included) as you love yourself. I think if that condition were applied to one's personal interpretation it would save a lot of misery and pain. That some do not remember that prime directive in the application of scripture is the answer I was looking for.

Because people get confused, and people get power hungry, and people like to control other people-- you know, human stuff. We all have that sin crap in us, and sometimes we do bad things. The thing with a true believer is; we are just saved crap doers.

The only ones that USE the Bible to justify any atrocities are unbelievers. Believers are suppose to read the word and use it to Bless others. JESUS says bless those who use you and say all manner of evil things about you He says nothing about getting back at others but to forgive.

Because it condones a number of atrocities within its covers. One can find justification for murder, slavery, bigotry, sexism and other wonderful crimes. The only real qualification in the Bible is who you commit these crimes against.
If one believes that they are the elite, sanctioned by God, then one can come up with a reaon for just about anything and justifiy it.

the bible is used because like anything in this world, all things are gifts from god. but can be used both ways good and evil, this is why we have choice.this kind of act isn't restricted to just the bible, the same person who uses his hand to feed a poor person can kill a person with that hand.
so to wrap it up. the bible has been used because of the heart of humans. His/her intention will ultimately leed to what they do with what they are given.

Such as? Could you give an example? You're being kind of general. Why is the Qur'an used to justify murder? Some people take what they want out of those books and use it to rationalize their behavior. In reality, they're just murderers and want to use religion as a veil for bad behavior. Don't blame the book, blame the idiot commiting crimes and using said book as an excuse.

Because people think that using faith or scripture as a defense will make them eligible to freely commit crimes. They pervert justice and God's Grace and will not be justified of their misdeeds.

The Bible has been used to justify atrocities because there is ample justification for atrocities in the Bible. All takes is a charismatic sociopath (*ahem* ...Hitler...) and a group of naive sheep.

Exactly! I just read an answer to another question quoting that it had been "prophecised" as if "prophecy" somehow excuses our inaction!
