I am a Marine serving in Iraq right now, I do not belive Gays should be allowed to serve in the military. Over here we have common showers where there is no privacy, I have enough to worry about over here without a gay guy checking me out while I am trying to wash.

Although I have not served in the military, yes, I do believe that gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve openly in the military. I would imagine that sex is the last thing on anyone's mind when on the front lines.

No. I'm a Navy veteran and if you can't be openly not gay, why should you be openly gay. In the military we go to work. We don't sit around talking about whom we are doing. Yes we had gay men and woman on the ship, but they didn't talk about it and neither did we. We did our jobs and that stuff doesn't belong at work no matter if you are gay or not. That's why the don't ask, don't tell policy is so great. It doesn't ban gay people from the military it just keeps the openly gay behavior out of the workplace. Don't jump ship on my last comment either. The same is true for non-gay people, we don't talk about it. I had a gay female that had the rack above mine in berthing. I knew, she knew I knew and we were fine. We again we at work. I'm not going to ask her to talk about deep personal details of what she does with other woman and she is going to respect my business when it comes to men. If you open stuff up, you will have hostile work environments and nobody wants that. Military people do not care about the gays, and the way things are set up now we spend out time doing our job instead of whispering he's gay or she's gay. They are excepted now, but I don't think if everything opens up the same would be true.

What do you mean by openly gay? In the service, there was little discussion during duty hours about our social lives unless we volunteered the information. Straight, gay, neither, bi - I really don't want to hear about your personal time just get your job done and don't flaunt your personal issues when you are supposed to be getting your job done.
The 'perfect' solution to this kind of question would be for the military to go completely non-gender. No separation of training, quotas, bathrooms, showers, quarters, etc ala Battlestar Galactica style. The funny part is that the American public would probably be less accepting of this solution than the soldiers themselves.

The day they let women be in combat mos's is the day they should be allowed to say they are gay.. the Military is old fashioned. Men would not work as well with gay men, but I think women would be fine.. They would also have problems with there teams, squads, whatever they are called everywhere else..

Yes, of course! A gay male or female can perform their military duty just as well as a straight person. Just because they are the same sex as you, doesn't mean they are attracted to you. Those that think otherwise probably spend too much time kissing their own reflection....they need to get over themselves. You're not attracted to every female you see, are you? You don't hit on every attractive co-worker, do you? A gay person can be relied upon to the same degree as anyone else.

I disagree with some of the Rightwing nuts out there.
I am more than willing to allow gays in the military.
In fact I suggest we make them the front line troops.
pssst, guys, if we let them join the military they'll all die out, but keep it under your hat.
Seriously though. There is no rule that says a soldier can''t be openly gay. However, there is a rule that says he can get his butt kicked if he comes on to another guy uninvited.

having someone 'openly' gay is going to cause so much problems. i myself dont really care too much b/c when i was in the army i learned one thing about people. never underestimate how stupid a human being can be. i was more worried of morons doing stupid, negligent things that could cost a life than if this person is gay or not. as long as people do their jobs and do them well...there shouldnt be a problem.
its just we havent progressed to that level yet.
but could u imagine the raucous made if there was someone stupid AND gay.

I asked a similar question earlier today. My opinion after all the feedback would be to keep gays out of the infantry - out of the shared foxholes and pup tents. But let them work openly in communications, translation, intelligence, army band. That is - put them in spots where their preference is less likely to get themselves or the guy who doesn't like them into trouble.

No not opening gay, just as we don't allow straights to be openly straight and screwing in the barracks.
