You either have downs or you dont. You can have diffrent levels of mental retardation. But you cant have a little bit of downs.
If your doctors cant tell they arent worth there salt!!!!!! Change doctors!!!!!!

There are different levels of severity in downs. I'm not sure of how the levels "work" but being a volunteer for one of the classes at the local high school, I have seen 4 people with downs and each case been different in how the person acts, communicates and even looks. So the best advice I can give is that you do your research online and take your daughter to different doctors until someone gives you a straight answer and can help you 110% with your concerns.

A child will either have Down's symdrome or not. It is a genetic issue, a trisomy ( three genes instead of two). There is no such thing as a "touch of downs." That being said, Down's syndrome has a wide variety of severity. A close friend of mine has a cousin with Down's. He can read and write, all at about the 12-year-old level (he is in his thirties). My friend is also a school teacher, and had a child in his class whose Down's was so severe that he could barely speak. A genetic test will tell if your daughter has Down's syndrome.

You either have the extra chromosome or you don't. However, the symptoms can vary widely. A simple test can tell. Many genetic problems have similar symptoms, though, so if it's not Down syndrome it could be something else. The best professional to see about this is a geneticist - a doctor who specializes in genetic conditions.

Down syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome (the twenty-first). Either the child has the extra chromosome or doesn't. Mental retardation and Down syndrome are, contrary to popular belief, not synonymous.
The previous person said twenty-third . . . they don't know what they're talking about. It's the twenty-first. Your child could have an extra chromosome elsewhere, but it wouldn't be Down syndrome then (though it could, and usually would, cause mental retardation).

Take her to another pediatrician for an evaluation. You can't have a little touch of Down's syndrome--either they are or they aren't. But there may be something else wrong like Turner's syndrome or some of those other genetic disorders.

You would have to get a chromo test to be sure. I think that there may be certain types of downs that are worse then others. Look at her hands are her fingers different? When my daughter was a newborn she would not look at me and used to stick her tongue out a lot. I thought for sure that she had it. My pediatrician looked at her hands and feet and told me that the only real way to tell was a DNA test. I didn't have it done and she turned out to be fine thank goodness. Good luck with your daughter.

Hello...any girl that is suspected of autism should ALWAYS be tested for Rett Syndrome. It is rare for girls to have autism but RS is almost exclusive to girls. Its a simple blood test but you have to ask for it.
