I've never painted a large area before; I know to cover anything I don't want to get paint on and use painters tape around baseboards and door frame. Is there anything else I need to know.

Don't completely trust the tape. Buy an angled brush, this helps you lay down the paint by windows and trim without pushing it under the tape. Cut your first stroke about 1/4 inch away from the trim tape, then the second stroke finishes the wall over to the tape. Some people like to use a roller first then finish the edges along the ceiling and the wall to wall corners with a brush, some do the opposite. Both are just fine.

Yes, clean the wall first with TSP. You can purchase it in liquid form. This will remove any oily residues. Use a good grade of paint, Don't skimp on this. The results will tell. Smile.
Purchase a good paint brush, preferrably a 2 1/2 to 3" cutting brush. If using water base paint use a nylon brush, If oil base use a bristle brush. Cheap brushes cause heartaches, Smile. A good roller should also be purchases, preferrably a lamb wool roller bonnet. A pan and extension handle.
When applying the paint by roller, don't try to get all of the paint out of the roller before reloading. Some people do and it causes thin spots. You should get an area approx 36" x 48" with each load.
When cutting in around the edges, don't load the brush too heavy as the paint will flow under th e the tape. I find doing the cutting prior to rolling eliminates the brush marks left by the brush
Remember to take your time. Also have proper cleaning solution. Water for latex, Mineral Spirits for oil.
Go for it,

You should make sure you use the right paints and applicators. If your dining room is frequented by guests you should use a high-quality paint that has a great ‘finished appearance’ rating. If you have pets and young children, you should use a specialty paint for scrubability. In either case I would recommend a paint with a satin/eggshell finish, it will make your life easier when you have to clean it. You should also use a drop cloth of some kind to protect your flooring.
When applying the paint, you should ‘cut in’ around the edges first with a new or well-kept angle sash brush and then roll out the main body of the wall. When doing the main part of the wall, you can reduce the appearance of lap marks by ‘back rolling’ the whole wall after you have applied the paint. Basically, you just roll top to bottom, top to bottom across the whole wall without reloading your roller.
If you have any questions, I would honestly recommend stopping by or calling your local Sherwin-Williams. I’m not just advertising for my workplace, I know how helpful and knowledgeable our staff is and I know that they will get you off on the right foot.

Everyone left out the most important part about cutting with a brush! If you are right hand you want to move right to left when you brush and bottom to the top when doing the sides. That ensures an even coat of paint and no brush marks. You will always brush back into to your work. the same goes for the top, wall to ceiling, right to left. 2ndly DONT GO TO Sherwin Williams! Way to expensive! Pittsburg's manor hall or MAB's top of line paint is a much better product and beats sherwin williams hands down in all paint test! Since you are going to be using a roller and no extension pole, start at the top and work your way down. This will ensure an even coat of paint, and you can go either way from right to left or left to right. You should get around 350 square feet to a gallon of paint. square footage is adding the lenghth and width of the room, then times it by 2 then times it by the height from floor to ceiling Example>>> 12'x15'=27'x2=54'times 8'=430' square feet; thats if your room is 12' wide, 15' long, and you have 8' from floor to ceiling. you may have 10' ceilings which would make it 540' square feet.

clean the walls with TSP and hot water to remove any grease and dirt. start from the bottom and work your way up so any dribbles don't streak the walls. rinse very well with hot water and change the rinse water often. this will assure that the paint sticks well and that you get a good paint job. after the walls dry completely (set up a fan to speed the drying), patch any nail holes with spackle, then lightly sand them. then use a primer and paint the walls with it, then you can put on the top coat of paint. if you are changing the color drastically, have the paint store tint the primer so that the coverage of the top color covers. you will want to use plastic drop clothes on the floor, but you can use them again when you are painting. wear goggles and rubber gloves when you are washing and rinsing since TSP is a harsh soap. you can find it at any paint or hardware store. good luck, and remember, any 'good' paint job is 90% prep work. that's why those painters get the big bucks!! lol.

The best thing to do after taping off your woodwork, is cut in. Use a brush to paint a 3"-4" strip on the top & bottom of your wall, & the corners. Then use the roller to finish. Much easier than rolling first. Wait a few hours before removing the tape.
