why is this asked in a Volkswagen specific area?
anyway....the older Mazdas that were actually Mazdas (before the Ford buyout in the mid 1990s) were very reliable...if they have been well taken care of. the four cylinders were virtualy indistructable and i had seen pleny of them roll into my service department with hardly any oil or coolant without any sign of overheating or ticking (GLC, 323, pickups, mx-3, mx-6, miatas).
the 1.8l V6 in the MX-3 was a great little engine that gave great performance in a small package, but had chronic valve cover leaks that would allow oil into the spark plug hole fouling the plugs, making the engine run rough and would turn the check engine light on with a code for engine misfire. the engine in the Miatas were damn near perfect, the go-kart like handling makes that car really fun to drive.
on the other hand, the Millenia S has a seriously complex engine (four cam shafts per cylinder bank) that is very expensive to fix and maintain, great performance tho. also, the rotary (wankle) engines were very efficient, but once they started to leak oil, it is almost as expensive to replace the engine as it is to get it overhauled. the strangest thing i noticed about the rotary motors: the people that drove the piss out of them and hammered on them had the best luck and the most miles...my customers who babied their RX7s always seemed to have oil leaks and worse overall performance...i never could figure that one out...the twin turbo rotary was a rocket.
ok, i just realized that this doesnt answer your question directly, but it's not really possible to give an answer. there are too many factors to consider to give a straight answer. but the better a motor is taken care of, the longer it's going to last and the more miles it can potentialy have.

I know mazda is related to ford somehow. Their b2500 and other b series pickup's were just rangers. And back in the day the mazda MX-6 actually was a probe.
