First, it is a naive question to ask "why do they hate us". They hate your government, not you. Your president wants to build an Empire on the corpses of Iraqis and many American soldiers die. To Iraqi people, or most of them, and to the whole world US troops are colonizers, they should be logically kiked out. This the logic in history. As the United States is a new country, I gonna give you the example of the British. Were not the British fought back by American settlers? So it is the same, a colonizer coming to colonize a land. It is so naive to say "we are teaching them freedom and democracy". Were thees two words able to speak themselves, they would have protested. Freedom is not killing Civilian innocents in Iraq in the first days of the conquest. Freedom is not raping men and women by American soldiers in Abu Garib Prison, and then trying to get things look better *Look for pictures in www.bbc.co.uk *
The sunni shi'i fight was long ago, but now it turned to a crazy and barbaric bloodshed. This exacerbated after the American invasion. Never in Iraq were people making suicide to kill others...

They've been fighting for decades, if not centuries.

It's another example of two different factions within a religion fighting against each other over who is right.

As far as the US presence -- we've been playing babysitter and nanny during the civil war that Iraq's been having.

to answer this question you must go much farther back in history. Remember that they were around over theve long before the US was founded. They hate each other for things that happened in their own past, not because of the US. If it was our fault they would have come together against us.
Middle East history is long and complex and cannot be answered simply here.

It's all about control. One thinks the other is wrong and will fight to proove it. They are all being brainwashed on a daily basis so they have lost their humanity and they have become puppets (in the name of religion).

We are in Iraq to help the people there have jobs, schooling, and freedom.

they are all in little groups. Each one is not just sunni or shi'it they got little clicks just like southern and northern baptists. Thats why it will never stabilize until they get another strong man to keep the little guys in check.
