I speak English. I speak some French (high school) and some German (basic college courses). I want to learn French now, but don't want to fall behind in my more recent German.... should I try to become fluent in both at once? Or is it just impossible?

No, it isn't impossible.

Just remember, you're entwined in a Romance Language avec Germanic tongue. This is a toughie.

Good luck.

Try moving to the Alsace Lorraine region. Given the upside down history of this great wine-making area, the use of the French and German languages are nearly synonymous.

Noo that's not crazy! The only bad thing that could happen would be that you could switch some words. I am learning Spanish in school and Japanese on my own. One time i was talking to a friend about a candy called "flower's kiss" and i was saying to him, in Spanish, "beso de la hana" and i was like WOAH "i mean de la flor".
I've also forgotten the word for flag (bandera) and only could think of the Japanese word (hata). but those words could SO be Spanish words.

I think French and German sound different enough that you won't have trouble with them. just don't try to speak both the languages at the same time (like me)

Depends on how closely related the languages are. Languages that are similar to each other might be confusing (Spanish and Portuguese). French and German are not close as far as spellings and pronounciation so you should not have a problem. I am learning Arabic and Italian at the same time.

Not at all. I am learning Japanese on my own, semi fluent in Spanish, fluent in English, and considering taking up Mandarin Chinese. The thing is to remember to talk with someone every day in the language so you don't forget it. The more you speak and hear it, the easier it is to learn. My props to you!!!

Hasta luego

Good bye

If you have the desire.....go for both!
My brother's children are being raised to learn 2 languages at once. Also , there are countries where children are taught up to 5 languages.
It's very possible. If you believe you can do it -don't let anybody tell you different.Just go for it and if it gets to be too tough, drop one for the time being until you're fluent with the other-- then pick back up on the one that you let go.

You can do anything you put your mind to. Just realize that learning two languages at the same time is going to be slower than learning one well and then adding on a second one later. The hardest part is remembering all those new words! Good luck.

It's absolutely not crazy. I learned Dutch in about one year. Then I begun to learn English and German at the same time, and... behold! I'm 4-lingual now.
My mother tongue is Spanish (:=>

it is impossible, i was trying to learn german and spanish at the same time. Unless you get a firm grasp on a certain language, one or the other is going to get completely erased. i forgot all of my german, but now know spanish fluently, i am currently trying to learn german again, and knowing the roots in spanish is making it easier. it is really really hard and not really worth doing. hopefully i could be of help.
