Bubonic Plague is caused by a bacteria called Yersina Pestis. Y. pestis can be found around South America, Central America, and even in to the western United States. In America it is typically transmitted bites from infected fleas.
Treatment is via antibiotics, which are very effective. Too bad antibiotics weren't around when 25% of Europe was being wiped out!

Normally it's carried by fleas on the backs of rats, but also in areas contaminated with sewage, debris, and dead animals, which is why they tell you to stay out of the water when there's a flood.

Any rodent can have it. Yes, stay away from squirrels. They're not so cute when you think of them as angry bags of Plague.
