VW is loaded with problems......I think I'd reconsider that choice.

Manual transmission cars are a lot better to drive in general, especially for the likes of a gti. to get an automatic vw gti would be a sin. manual is a faster gear change and also uses less fuel. in europe here its the only way to go. unless it is a newer vw gti with the DSG dual clutch gear box same as the Audi TT, dont get an automatic.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI falls under the hot hatch group, getting it in Automatic is going to be quite hard! Rather look for a Jetta CLI if you want a automatic car in that class. It comes with the same engine and specifications as the Golf GTI ! A manual gearbox is way better that a autobox in town and on the open road. It is more economic on fuel as well.
The only place where it is better is when you get stuck in peak traffic alot! Then the manual gearbox`s clutch kills you left leg.

A manual will wear you out in the city but ok for the freeway unless it's a day when you are having to down shift a lot. You should have a lot of fun with the VW. Good Luck

It depends on the city..yes, they are definitely more fun to drive, and are better on gas mileage, but if you're in a city with a lot of steep hills, you may find yourself using the e brake more than you'd like to. It's not the transmission, but the fact that since most cars now are automatic, other people don't think enough to leave space when they pull up behind you - thus causing a frequent problem. I live in seattle and it's no San Fran, but I sitll ran into this all the time when I drove a 5 speed. Hope this helps!

Manual transmission cars are fine to drive in the city and on the freeway.....will give better gas mileage than an automatic as long as you shift to the appropriate higher gear i.e. 4th or 5th gear over 30 mph in city........highest gear once rolling at 60 mph on freeways....remember.....the higher rpms you do on your tachometer, the greater gas being used....the only drawback that I had with a few manuals I had in the past was that WHEN STOPPED ON A HILL in the city, you have to keep your foot on the brake as well as depress the clutch at the same time, otherwise you'll roll back into car behind you.....AND WHEN STARTING UP AGAIN ON THE HILL, you have to engage 1st gear at the same time you remove your foot from the brake and get moving uphill INSTANTLY.....if you remove your foot from the brake first and then engage 1st gear, until it actually engages, you'll roll backwards!

Manuals are great, but getting harder to find. I have no problems at all shifting in city traffic, it becomes routine with a little practice. I very much prefer stickshifts in wet or snowy weather, since you can slow the car by downshifting rather than using the brakes, which sure feels a lot safer. I always feel that there is more finesse (and certainly more fun) in driving a stick. I bet you'll end up liking this car better than an automatic.

I would say freeway because there is less wear and tear in the shifting of gears, so your manual tranny lasts longer. Either way, manual transmissions use less gas. Automatic is nice, but after driving a stick shift for a while, it becomes automatic, if you know what I mean.

Sounds to me that you have never driven manual before? I have never driven automatic. But driving manual is automatic to me - I don't think about it, I just shift when I have to like anywhere else. Like everyone else who drives manual. The city is not the place to learn to drive manual. (The stopping and stalling part.) Once you are good at it, you won't think twice.
Manuals work fine in the city considering so many cars there are such.

Manuals are fine. It is move wear on the clutch than the actual trans. Depending on the year, auto vw trans are sometimes called "slush boxes" and are filled with problems if not taken very good care of.
