I am a practicing and devout Catholic and now attend Catholic school. I think that it is the one religion everyone is supposed to belong to. God sent Jesus, his only son, into the world and during the 33 years of his life he established the Catholic church. Peter means rock and Jesus said " On this rock I will build my Church and the Gates of Hell shall not prevail against it." This Church is the Catholic Church and when you are a good Catholic you do not pick and choose what you want to follow and you have to have a thorough knowledge of your faith. Many people don't realize that it is an enormous advantage to be part of the Catholic church because if you offer up all your sufferings to God and just obey every single commandment, all your troubles and the world's troubles will disappear. For example, if everyone obeyed the commandment You shall not commit adultery or in other words premarital sex or other things then it gets rid of so many problems like abortion, aids, divorce, lessens the number of orphans. Even though most Catholics don't know this , the Church is a Sacrament. If you ask a priest he will tell you this. The Roman Catholic Church is a sacrament. If you define what a sacrament is it says that it is a visible sign of inward grace instituted by Christ. Which is exactly what the Catholic church is.

The CHURCH i.e. the Roman Pope, Dogma, Clergy, the Catholic might not be 100% pure. But I have seen what the Roman Catholic Church has done in Tsunami torn Aceh, East Timor, Borneo through its congreations, Catholic Relief Service, Jesuit Relief Service etc. etc. They build hospitals, schools, creating income-generating programmes for small businesses.
They have empowered people and help elleviate proverty without forcing people to convert. In the end, people see the fruit. A good tree is judged from its fruits!

What I know about the Catholic Church is that it was the first Christian Church; the only Christian Church for most of the history of Christianity; the only Church founded by Jesus Christ; and the only Church He ever intended to exist. It is the only Church where the fullness of Christian truth can be found. All of the other unauthorized manmade churches teach a mix of genuine truth received from the Catholic Church, and modern traditions of men invented by and received from their various human founders. The Catholic Church is the only truly biblical church - as you might expect, given that the Catholic Church compiled the Bible in the first place.

Amen, brother in Christ and fellow Catholic.
For too long we (the Christians of the many traditions following Christ) have been divided on the points of Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide.
The reality, as beholden to us in Scripture, is:
Sola Christus, Sola Gratia
History and Scripture, faith and reason, coalesce on these points. The Catholic Church is the Ancient and Original Church of Christ on Earth. It is not the only place people have found Christ, but it remains a stronghold against which the gates of hell shall not prevail, neither in this life nor in the true eternal Life to come.
Let no one tell you that you are deceived - for you know the truth, and the truth has freed you and led you home.
Let no one tell you that we are a cult - they confess only their misunderstanding and their acceptance of centuries-old, politically-motivated prejudices that ought to be stamped out by the light of reason in this age of information and understanding.
Let no one tell you we do not follow Christ - you (and all who pay attention at Mass) know that Christ is our center, our Rock, our shield, our strength, our life.
Let no one tell you that the Catholic Church or the Pope or any tenet of our faith tradition which they do not understand is not called for Scripturally - I guarantee you that neither they, nor their pews, nor the phrase "The Bible" that they cling to so dearly was written in Scripture.
Let no one tell you that Bible contradicts the Church - without the Church, there would be no Canon, no official compendium of Scripture to be called "The Bible".
Sola Gratia, Sola Christus, is the motto by which we shall proceed to Heaven.
Live your faith every moment of every day. It is a tremendous gift, bought at great and terrible price.
In Christ,
V17

Why do you care what people think about the Catholic church? I don't care what people say about Baptists, but if someone disses my church, I will give it to them w/both barrels.
However, since you asked, I think the Catholic church is surrounded in mystery. I don't quite understand about the Pope and why he has soo much authority to American Catholics. I know Catholics say priests can't marry as they are already "married to Christ", but I don't understand that either. I don't think confessing to a priest or pastor for that matter can save you, only asking Jesus to forgive you can save you.
I do think they are very dedicated and committed to their religion and that they do a lot of good for the community they are in. I think any true Christian Church that follows the Bible is a good church. I may not agree with the Catholic doctrine, but I'm glad you're a Christian and are following Christ.

I have mostly positive feelings about it. I don't know. My maternal grandmother's side of the family is Catholic, and even though I was raised atheist, I was a practicing Catholic from ages 22-26. I still believe in the Eucharist in my way, I'm just not into the dogmatism. I've had some very interesting experiences with the Eucharist/Communion ... there is definitely something to it, but that doesn't mean that all the dogma/catechism/papacy is necessarily correct. My 2 cents.

Boy, you really asked for it. You got all the bigots and haters coming out.
I cannot express my love for the Catholic Faith/Church in words. I can only attempt to by metaphor. It is the pearl of great price; the one thing most worthy of dying for. The faith is our road to salvation and the Church (The Body of Christ) is the vehicle that carries us on that road. The Eucharist is the fuel for the vehicle.
Obviously, I'm not the greatest poet... lol. I don't know what else to say.
Thank you for making me think about this.

It is good. I am Anglo-Catholic, AKA High Church Episcopalian so our practices are somewhat the same. The differences, however, are why I am Episcopalian and not RC. (Pro-choice, women's rights, birth control, women in the priesthood, etc.) I like the new Pope and John Paul II too. Some RC said here that she thought that we hated the Pope. I don't know where she got that idea. We are a bit rebellious, and we don't want to follow papa. What is wrong with that?
Seriously, I hope that one day the Anglican, Orthodox and RC will all be back in communion with each other.
