regarding the youth, you will find that ping pong, football (soccer), basketball, and video games ....if you consider that a sport, to be popular.
As for the old, they seem to have a wide array of interests to keep active including, ping pong, walking (sometimes backwards while hitting different muscle groups, badminton, crouqette, that weird game with the top and the rope with two handles that they use to pick the top up and catch it/ keep it spinning......(I can't do it, nor explain it well, but they are fantastic at this) and I even see the elder people playing a version of hacky-sack, but, instead of a beanbag, it is a padded weight with coloured feathers. They are very good at this. They have alot more activites I'm sure.
BTW, to translate for some of the other posts
Tai ji quan = (ty chee) is that slow martial art that works balance and focus. Mostly older people do this one, and the 70-80 year old ladies near my school do it with swords every morning at 6am.
Wu Shu = martial arts, (usually kung fu) and this done by the old and young alike, but not as much as we think they do in the west.
Ping Pang = Ping Pong... of course, but I'm impressed that ykphil has the tones added for correct pronouciation.... how do I get that?
Hope this helps :)

The most popular sports in China is definitely the table tennis. And that's why Chinese are so good at it. Other sports like football and basketball are also very popular for students.

If you consider both the old and young it will be the table tennis -- ping pong. It is played everywhere....Basketball is catching on very quickly due to the prominence of Yao Ming (from the Houston Rockets)
His larger than life size posters are in the big cities...

For having been a student in university and for having taught in middle school, all I saw was that boys (only) like playing basketball a lot. even at night without lights when it is freezing they still play.
Soccer is catching but is still far behind. Another one is badminton ( both girls and boys and any age ).
Old people like playing cards games and mahjong in the street.
