A straight on shot from small arms fire will be repelled by Kevlar helmets. Rifle rounds may be deflected if it is a glancing blow, but a head on shot will likely achieve penetration. Kevlar helmets do provide protection from penetration, but there is still an extraordinary amount of force being dispersed throughout the helmet and all that is contained within it. Failure of a bullet to penetrate does not guarantee survival, because the trauma of the impact is just as deadly as being hit in the head with a baseball bat.

There was a program on the Militaty channel about three weeks ago, where they showed the tests on the Kevlar Helmet. Interestingly enough, Like it's predessor, The type of projectile, and angle of attack are critical factors as to what it will stop. A glancing angle ball round will not penitrate. But, a dead on right angle jacketed round will penitrate. This is not to say that it will cause a terminal wound. The physics of how much the kenetic energy is dispelled by the projectile as passes through the kevlar was not discussed. As A combat vet, I can tell you that even with the old steel pot, Just because the projectile pentrated, did not necessarily mean the guy in the helmet was hurt!!!!!

The Kevlar has stopped many an AK-47 round. When you hear the level of protection that is only what they will guarantee. The dome shape and thickness of the Kevlar makes it a very tough nut to crack.

They're really for grenades and other fragmentary devices, and bullets at long range. They'll deflect lots different rounds if the angle is right. Any dead on shot with a bullet over .38 caliber is probably going to pass thru and be fatal.
