Consider this scenario and please post your views. Thank you.
An 18 year old girl has a certain disability and her parents are worried because she is too friendly and places enormous trust on strangers. They have suggested to their physician about the possibility of the girl undergoing hysterectomy "just to be safe" as in preventing the girl from being exploited by strangers and possibly getting pregnant.
What do you think about their suggestion?

If the girl has a mental handicap so severe as to render her unable to make decisions then perhaps the solution would be to keep better supervision over her so those evil people are unable to have their way with her.

This is much too drastic a measure, no matter WHAT the disability. I'm not sure of the situation, but maybe she needs to be taught to not be so trusting of strangers. I'd say the safest bet is a contraceptive implant for now. They are harmless and can be taken out at anytime the girl wants. She IS an adult after all, no matter what her case may be. Under the court, she is able to make her own decisions and can fight this choice of a hysterectomy if her parents decide to go through with it. Receiving a hysterectomy may put her into early menopause/hot flashes, which is something that may not need to be dealt with in addition to the disability. Sounds like the whole family (or at least the parents) need some counseling on this issue. A hysterectomy is WAYY too drastic a measure.

I think that you would be hard pressed to find a doctor who would preform an elective hysterectomy on a disabled girl.

Having her tubes tied makes much more sense. Better yet would be an IUD, although I know a lot of people have negative opinions about those because the old ones were prone to infection.

It sounds like her parents are a little off mentally. I seriously don't think you have much to worry about here, no way a doctor is gonna do this unless he into some really fringe stuff.

I can't believe this is true and I can't believe you posted it in the etiquette category. What kind of disability could she have that would justify this? She's a teenager and if she had a total hysterectomy she would go through menopause. Five year old children can be educated about strangers so I really don't see why a disabled 18 year old couldn't be.
I'm not sure I acutally believe one word of this. I'm going to hope this is a joke because the idea that parents would do this to their child is very sad. It's also really hard to believe they could get a surgeon to even do this. The kind of doctor that would agree to this is a doctor I wouldn't want operating on me.

If its certain she will never be able to have children and care for them, i say do it.
Its a hard decision, but the chances of her being taken advantage of is pretty high these days.
It would also spare her of any period pain or problems, which might help her depending on her disability.
i hate the thought that something as serious as a hysterectomy has the be considered these days because people are so untrustworthy. But its better than one day knowing someone has manipulated the situation and caused her more problems.
Good luck

No. Please. For the life of the girl, this is way too young. She will never have a period, and where will that all go. And then the possibility of bone fragility. Most gynoc. will advise you not to as such a young age. I know someone that had a hysterectomy and there is a terrible odor down in the vaginal area that is so repulsive that I gag, and the odor it leaves on underwear and pants is unbearable. Don't put her through this please.

Consult a gyno. for other alternatives.

A hysterectomy will not prevent her from being exploited. This is eerily similar to the "Pillow Angel" girl. I am not a doctor, and don't know what the condition is that this young woman has, but my first instinct tells me to leave her body alone and keep a better eye on her.

Why not just hire someone to watch over her? This is pretty drastic...is she going to be permanently disabled or are you saying she is mentally impaired? I am sorry this is truly a question to answer while looking at the complete picture.....if it were my sister or daughter I would look first look for other alternatives, although if she is mentally challenged then I guess maybe getting her tubes tied...but not hysterectomy! That's too drastic. I hope I was able to give you a positive answer.

Well, the Nazi's did it, why not this girl's parents. If they were really only concerned about contraception (because a hysterectomy won't prevent sex) then there are MUCH less drastic measures, such as tubal ligation, the patch, etc.

no its not appropriate, getting a hysterectomy will have many side effects such as possibly going through early menopause, if they are concerned they should just put her on the pill, or only get the tubes tied
