Probably a subprime credit card company like Aspire.

They legally purchase your information from the credit reporting agencies and/or from the other credit companies you do business with.

The only way to keep them from legally purchasing your credit information is to Opt Out.

Opting out does have it's drawback since the non subprime companies cannot purchase your credit information and send you the good deal.

If you do want to opt out, go to the FTC website for opting out and follow the instructions. You should also opt out with "every" company you have credit business with - credit card companies, banks etc.

Opting out is not the same as the do not call registry.

I have heard of scams like this. Some even have your credit card number and everything and all they ask for is the 3-4 digit code on the back of your card, so they could make online purchases.

It happens all of the time. It is a good thing you were thinking on your toes. Same thing happened to my grandmother a few years ago.
