No, the last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978. Smarty Jones lost the Belmont in 2004 to Birdstone (a 36-1 long shot) by a length.

NO, he lost the Belmont. The reason many horses can't win that race is because it is longer than the other two races that precede it. The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978. He was interesting because although he won the Triple Crown himself, he was more or less a failure as a sire. Most of his offspring have been mediocre racers at best- there haven't been many of his get that did anything of note. Ironically, Affirmed's rival that year, Alydar, was and continues to be recognized as an outstanding sire. There have been many of his get that have won big stakes races, including some of the Triple Crown races. Some of his offspring have included Alysheba, St.Alydar, EasyGoer ( a grandson) as well as lots of others. Hope that answers your question.

OMG I can't believe he didn't win the Belmont. He was undefeated! I wonder why it is that horses that are on there way to win the Triple Crown and always loose at the Belmont?
Anyways I can't member who beat him but I know he like only lost by 2 lengths. So no he didn't win the TC:(
This busniess really needs a Crown winner to so lets hope that we get one this year or next! Hopefully this year or the year that Barbaro's full brother races in 2009. Hopefully he has the talents of his wonderful brother.

No, i think it has been like 30 years since a horse has won the triple crown. Affirmed? I'm not sure on affirmed, but i know smarty jones didn't win it because if a horse gets close i always watch to see if they win the last one.
