A former Catholic priest informed that, their fasting is eating half of what they used to it. THAT they call fasting.

Ridiculous.

Some Christians think that fasting grabs God's attention more because it show God how sincere you are in your request. Others do it just to practice self denial. Some think it causes them to feel the spirit more. Still others do it simply so they can give the money that they would of spent on food to the poor. If you fast for two meals and the total cost of those two meals would of been $5 then you give the $5 that you didn't spend to a food bank or some other charity like your church.

It's abstaining from food or foods for the sake of denying the flesh. This is to be done in complete secrecy before you and the Lord.

Matthew 6:16-18
“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."

Matthew 6:17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

6:18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

They are both acts of faith. Prayer is when you trust God to listen.

Fasting is when you leave you dependence upon food, or things, and focus on God instead.

Matthew 6 is where you read about them.
