Check the starter motor & starter Solenoid. Normally I would check the battery first, but since this problem appears to be intermittent, the battery is probably okay. If you know somebody who can remove the starter motor for you, you can carry it into most major auto parts stores like AutoZone and they will test it for free. If you try to remove the starter motor yourself, be absolutely sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal first or you could start a fire with the dangling positive battery cable at the starter. Hope this helps.

so it was hard to start before and now it wont turn over???
did the engine seem to be slow to turn over on the last few attempts to start??? sounds suspiciously like a flat battery, if your turning the key and you get a click clic click noise, then i'd say thats it, this is either due to your battery being old and worn out or your altenator not charging enough/at all. but battery troubles are the more common.
more info will get you a better diagnosis.

weak battery. That means your only getting enough juice to make the starter solenoid to move but not turn over the engine. However, if you hear the starter hitting hard then your engine is locked up. But I suspect that isn't the case since your hearing a whimpering click. One other issue to prove the starter or battery is weak is a jump start. If a jump wont turn it over then it's one of the other evils.

Here is exactly your problem. You need to get a battery post wire brush it is under $3 and has circle with wire brushes inside for cleaning posts and pull the cap off and has a wire brush similiar to a baby bottle brush. Take that and scrub both the posts and your terminals from the car thoughly and then put the terminals back on the battery and push and twist a little as you put them on . Then tighten you cables and your back on the road GAURANTEED.

You're alternator may not be putting out voltage. Put a meter on the battery with the engine running should have 13.6V, if not the alternator. You may have a bad ground or other weak connection. The contacts on the starter solenoid?

If the car is wurling over slower than normal, or is just clicking, you may need to buy a new battery.
