My mom's face and tongue will swell up every once in a while. Sometimes it will be the right side of her mouth or her right eye and sometimes it will be on the left. Her tongue will also swell up. She has been to many doctors and specialists and none of them have any answers. She has been tested for several allergies and they have all came back negative. The only thing they tell her is to take benedryl when it starts to happen. Sometimes it will happen once a week for several weeks or a couple of times a month and then not happen again for months. There is never any rhyme or reason to it. Does anyone else have this problem or maybe have any ideas what it could be? Any information would be appreciated.

Hmm, definitely sounds like an allergy to something either in the home or most especially like a food allergy. You need to get her to try to remember everything she has done, been around or eaten the day that these things happen. Eventually you will be able to narrow it down.
The reaction she is having would typically cause some swelling but the swelling of the tongue is of the greatest concern because if it swells too much and too quickly she will not be able to breathe. If it is severe enough we would have a very difficult time helping her even if she were already in the emergency room and might, in rare and severe cases, have to place a tracheostomy or hole in the throat, just to help her to breathe while we dealt with the swelling.

Enough said, do your best to track down the culprit, the one thing or combination of things that are causing these reactions and then you can deal with it more effectively.

Best of luck

I'm a nurse and it sounds like stroke symptoms. When she experience this have her to speak, and hold both her arms up in the air ( I know this sounds weird ). People when they are having problems with their brain can have difficulty preforming these simple tasks. She could have just a sensitivity to something she eats also, notice what she is doing right before this happens. Take care and I hope this is useful information, all the best.
