Usually 1 personal bag, like a purse or computer bag and then one other bag to be carried on. Then depending on what airlines you are flying on will depend on what they allow you to check without charging you additional fees. You can take as many bags as you wish as long as you pay for them. That fee will depend upon how many you have and the weight of each. If you have alot of things, it will probably be cheaper to send it as freight by the same airline, the rates will be cheaper and you can ship most of it in the same container which can be a large one. Again, check with the airline and they can tell you the best way and the cheapest way to do this.

You can check 1 bag unless you pay more. As far as carry ons that varies. You get one carry on bag. Purses and computers don't count. Check with the airline though to see if they have any exceptions.

true, each airline is different, buuut, good rule to go by (i've flown many different airlines; southwest, delta, continental, air lingus, jet blue, both nationally and internationally and they all follow this rule):
checked baggage: 2 bags per person not to excede 50lbs each (you usually have to pay about $25 or more if you excede the weight limit)
carry on: one bag and one personal item (e.g. purse and laptop case)
*remember no liquids (includes gels, toothpaste, chapstick, lotions) or sharp items (nail clippers, scissors, knitting needles) in carry on luggage

Each airline is different so check their website. Most now have a weight limit too.
