Bipolar is not a disease. Just because psychological disorders run in his family doesn't mean that he is bipolar. Furthermore, just because he displays some of the symptoms also doesn't put a diagnoses of bipolar in place.
If you think he has a problem, all you can do is ask him to be evaluated. What makes you think that he is bipolar other than a possible history of psychological disorders in the family?

He won't go because he doesn't believe anything is wrong with him. Don't be too quick to judge him unless you have a medical degree. He may have some of the symptoms, but it may be something completely different. Don't approach him in a way that you think something is wrong with him. Tell him that something is wrong with YOU and HIM. If you talk about the marriage issues rather than the issues that are solely with him, the discussion includes both of you rather it seeming like it is just you confronting him. Talk about the marriage and see if you can get him to see a marriage therapist about the marriage problems. This way you do have a third party. Explain to the therapist that you think there's a chance he needs testing for bipolar for the sake of the marriage. If he does have it, you BOTH will need help to learn to deal with it. I am speaking from experience. I live with the love of my life and he has bipolar. It's not easy sometimes, and some days I want to bang my head against a wall. I know, however, that he will have good days and he will have bad days, but the good ALWAYS outweighs the bad. I love him dearly and nothing will change that.

If you need someone to talk to, email me. If he really does have it, I know what you are going through.

Bipolar Disorder is an illness. Be careful, it has become a very popular disorder and is over diagnosed. Many people are being diagnosed who are not Bipolar. Your husband may or may not have the illness. You have made the suggestion and it is up to him what he chooses to do with the suggestion. Relax, if you pressure him, you will just cause conflict between the two of you.

I was engaged years ago to a man with bipolar disorder so I can empathize with you. Instead of asking him just to get checked for the bipolar, perhaps you could suggest that he go for to the doctor for a thorough physical and take that opportunity to ask his physician about tests for bipolar (which, I believe, is a check of lithium levels). Your husband probably fears the stigma associated with mental illness and he might be more comfortable having the those kind of tests as part of an over phsyical exam.

I lived with some one with this disease long time ago.He was some times talking to him self. His mood swings was extrem. He could not sleep and over indulge him self with alchool. It is an awfule disease to the person who has it and the person who lives with him or her, but you should take him to the doctor,it is better to be safe then sorry! They get obsessed with the toughts of hurting them selves if they do not take their medications properly!I know I had the same problem with him and after he attempted suicide,he finally accepted to go see a professional,do not let that happens and prevention is the key.they are not good at taking care of their children for too long. Do not trigger him but explain it that you are just trying to help and not hurt him.Do not go head to head with him !BE very patient and understanding . Listening helps a lot.Good luck with every thing
