I was brought up as a Catholic in England by my Irish mum. We didn't eat meat on ANY Friday. Not only during Lent.

I'm a Catholic from Poland. Every country's Bishop Conference can select certain laws that apply to their country. It's been tradition that you fast on Fridays, and even though that is gone now in Poland as well (there was a reform of the laws), many people still adhere to it as it's been a years-long tradition. It's definitely not made up, and people should fast more anyway, but as far as I know the Catholic Church in the US doesn't require fasting every Friday. The only Fridays required are during Lent.

I was raised Catholic and do come from somewhere other than the U.S., but that is beside the point. That "law" was overturned back somewhere in the 1960s. Which is really funny, given the dogma and bad ju-ju that befell a Friday meat-eater before the '60s. Can you just see some poor goner still suffering the torments of purgatory while Catholics nowadays dig into their filet mignon on Fridays instead of the traditional crappy fish dinner. That must really suck.

I am from the US but I know that it was indeed made up by fishermen, but not fishermen in Boston it has been a rule since Constantine, only pre-Vatican II it was every Friday all year, and is a symbol of sacarfice, most religions have it except for the Protestants, (not that there is anything wrong with that!)
