Traditionally, the bridesmaids were there to confuse any would be attackers and to protect the bride.

Traditionally the bridemaids were all dressed like the bride and the groomsmen like the groom - the reason for this (as another poster already stated) is to confuse "evil spirits". In more recent years they have become more helpers to the bride and groom for wedding tasks. In most states witnesses are still required and so the maid of honor and the best man often act as these witnesses.

i'm not sure of the role of bridesmaids but the maid or matron of honor helps the bride get ready for her wedding, is supposed to help pack the troussou, carry the groom's ring, and sign as a witness the marriage certificate.

In recent years bridesmaids have gone from being "evil spirit protectors" to having the honor os "standing" for the bride on her day. A bridesmaid stands with the bride during the wedding to vouch for her honor and protect her and show that she is loved and cared about. Despite the mild cheesiness of bridesmaids, they are usually a core group of friends that the bride wants to share her day with.

They are the legal witnesses to your marriage contract, which is why the maid/matron of honor and best man also sign the marriage certificate.

A woman whom I know of was a nervous bridesmaid, got drunk between the ceremony and the reception, then crash-tackled the bride's mother, resulting in both hitting the wedding cake, along with the bride.Social death,or just 'warming -up'?

It is from a old traditional custom. They aren't needed.
Usually the MoH & B/M are for witness purposes. But here in Ohio, witnesses are no longer needed.

I hope there's no purpose because I don't anticipate ever having groomsmen for my wife's (hopefully one day) bridesmaids.
