I'd like to correct my posture, the problem is I have alot of back pain as it is, and trying to sit up straight makes it hurt even worse. Is there some physical therapy exercises that I could do to improve this?

before u do any exercise, try to find out why you have back pains so much. There are couple movements that will help u strengthen ur back muscle but you should not do it yourself. I think it's better if you see an chiropracter or orthopedist. Consult with them and see what they will suggest you to do. Another possible thing is that your spine is not straight enough that way it causes imbalance in ur back muscle that's why u cant even sit straight.

You did not say how old you were but you should see either an #1.orthopedist, #2,neurologist or #3. neurosurgeon in that order. I'm betting your young. It's too soon for you to be suffering with these problems. If you have a medical problem, medical Docs. should see you first. I'm a prime example. I went to a chiropractor because of back pain. He took X rays and when I asked what was in them he wouldn't answer. I finally saw an orthopedist. X rays showed a deformed vertebra from birth. I wore braces corsets and ate pain pills nothing helped. Finally bu doc sent me to a very specialized orthopedist who performed a lumbar 4 to the tail bone spinal fusion today I'm dead cured. Don't wait get help now.

Good posture should not hurt unless there is a problem such as disc herniation or spinal stenosis (the later which is not likely considering your age). You need further evaluation to determine why this is painful. A disc bulge or herniation can physically block you from attaining full erect posture...this definetely needs to be ruled out.
Once this is taken care of, there is no better posture exercise than the practicing of good posture itself...it, in itself, is an exercise and takes persistence and practice to perfect...just like any other exercise.

I suppose you could always ask your daughter or type "Physical therapy Excercises" in any search engine I'm sure something is gonna come up.
And try to sit all the way back in the chair when you sit up straight, that way you have something to lean on.

the best thing to do is see your doctor or chiropractor. they can take an x-ray and determine what they can do to help you improve. if you can't afford that right now make...Make sure you are sleeping properly. Do you have a good mattress? Don't slouch. Are you overweight? Exercising always helps me.

Without an exam, your question cannot be answered. Without knowing what is wrong with your back, anything you do may be dangerous. See a doctor or chiropractor and get x-rays and an exam. Then follow their advice.

besides things like yoga or Pilate's you may want to check with a doctor to see if your flat footed, I was found to be flat footed and my posture has become so much better since I got inserts for my shoes.
