For you Toyota/Honda fans out there, shut up, unless you have had first hand experiance with multipul Taurus's. The Ford Taurus has been, probably, one of the greatest vehilces ever made. They are extremly reliable, and have sold for about 20 years. Very few vehicles have been aroudn this long and still last. I see them quite often coming into the shop with 300 000+ km on them and still running like the day they drove off the lot. I have had friends with countless Tauruses and they have all lasted throught sever abuse. The biggest killers of this car is non-maintance, its the same killer for anything on the road. Parts for this car are quite reasonably priced, and aside from looks, are an awesome family car. They are very reliable and user friendly. I would put this car before a Honda or Toyota any day. They have had recalls in the past, just like almost any other car vehicle out there. Don't let a recall scare you. My truck has had a few recalls and once the recall problems have been adressed the truck has given me nothing but worry free miles. The truck is a 1989 Ranger Custom. Ford got their bad name from thier ecnoboxes they made to compete with Honda and Toyota. Not thier best idea. But thier larger vehicles I see outlast more Honda/Toyota vehilces. How many Honda/Toyotas do you see with 700 000km and still on the road and have only had maintance preformed. Why do you think most fleet departments use Ford vehilces, Crown Victorias, Taurus (fomer Taurus, then replaced with the Five Houndred, then with the Fusion, soon to be back to the Taurus), Explorers, and F-150's? They last even when they have the boots put to them. I ride my truck hard, a lot harder then it was built for, and I have had no problems caused by proper use, the only problems I have had with it was when I was doing something with it I knew I shouldn't have been doing. For the amount of Taurus's on the road, I see very few in my shop for anything, and about 95% of the time I do have one in, its for maintance. I was originally going to buy one.

OK... here's the real story!
The Taurus was one of the most successful models ever by any manufacturer.
Not only did it appeal to families but to many many many businesses.
It was sold both retail & fleet.
It was also built at 2 plants, Chicago & Atlanta.
In 2006 (here's where it gets confusing) Ford REPLACED the Taurus with the FUSION for RETAIL sales.
But CONTINUED to build the Taurus for its vast FLEET market, but only built them at the Atlanta plant.
Ford also introduced a new model in 2005, the FiveHundred.
The Five Hundred was/is LARGER than the Taurus/Fusion size.
So all the '06 & '07 Taurus's were originally built for & could ONLY be ordrered for FLEETS. (companies, ordering 10 or more would be considered fleet) You could not buy just one for yourself.
Those fleets have an agreement with Ford, after 1-2 years, when they are through with them, Ford buys them back, & Ford auctions them to Ford Dealers.
They are then known as "program cars"
The price that you are looking at is a pretty good deal. My dealership buys as many of these as we can get our hands on and I sell them left & right.
It is one of the best values in a used car on the market today.
There were 2 recalls on this vehicle, one involved the windshield wiper, & one affected 19 vehicles bought by one fleet customer, & involved the re-wiring of the passenger air bag LAMP (not the airbag itself). The rewiring was done at their request to accomodate additional electronic equipment & legally had to be recalled & rewired befor these vehicles could be resold as program cars.
Here is the link for that data:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallresults.cfm?start=1&SearchType=DrillDown&type=VEHICLE&year=2006&make=FORD&model=TAURUS&component_id=0&TYPENUM=1&SUBMIT=Retrieve Recalls&prod_id=208793&PrintVersion=YES
Now to make things even more confusing:
Ford did some research on the Five Hundred, (which by the way, is a great car & is very highly rated by consumers, & the NHTSA & the Insurance Institute, and Consumer Report Magazine) as to why it was a slow seller.
What they found was that people were slow to recognize the NAME. They hardly knew it existed ! And since Ford already had a good thing with the Taurus NAME. ....& the Chicago plant (which used to build the VERY popular Taurus) now builds the Five Hundred ....And they stopped offering the Taurus to the fleet cuustomers .....Ford has now decided to change the NAME of the FiveHundred to Taurus when they redesign it for 2008.
SO THAT IS THE STORY!
((( if your still confused just e-mail me ))))
but rest assured the '06 Taurus @ $12500 is a good deal!
& if you're buying it from a new Ford/Mercury dealer, they will be happy to certify it & document it for you!
Enjoy your new car & quit freakin' out about it....LOL

That is probably the BEST year of Taurus to purchase. They are inexpensive, and very trouble free, particularly this late of model year of Taurus, before they discontinued it, and replaced it with the slow selling Five Hundred. Ignore the idiots who will answer this question advising you to buy a Honda or Toyota instead. They have had more than their share of problems as well, from what I've been hearing lately.

Daughter bought one a year old for about the same price. She has loved it, and has not had any trouble out of it at all. We used to have a 86 Sable, which is Mercury's version and the last I heard it was still running with over 200K on it and no one has ever been inside the engine since new. I got it from my step dad then I gave it to my daughter. So it's been through 3 generations. Daughter sold it to a friend of hers.

They just stopped making them - Good cars - just didn't sell well and were replaced by the 500 (I think). For recalls check the NHTSA website. I am not aware of any for the recent Taurus. They will be back in 2008
