Something pampering because they probably feel like laying around. A magazine, cozy blanket, crossword puzzle book, a meal (that is not spicy or full of tomatoes).

Get a funny stuffed animal that sings. It will male them smile without fail. unless it was abdominal surgery...you dint want them to bust a gut laughing - in that case...flowers. Vanilla Orchids in a pot are great and different.

When else in life do you ever get balloons? So, I would get a couple of those and their favorite magazine. I'd keep away from food though depending on the situation. Also a phone card if they live away from family/friends.
