A lot of SSRI's are indicated for this, and it is really impossible to tell which one will not make you tired. Some people who get tired on Paxil won't on Zoloft, and vice versa, but there are several more SSRI's. It may take a little bit of trial and error with your prescriber.

In addition, if this social phobia really has you worked up into a frenzy, it may help to get some counseling to help guide you as you learn to become more comfortable in social situations. These people can't solve your problems or make excuses for them, but they can help you understand why things are the way they are and strategies for changing things.

I had social phobia so bad when I was younger. Unfortunately I ended up drinking and clubbing a lot to make it go away. Now that I'm older I don't have it but I wish I would have gotten counseling instead of drinking and clubbing my phobia away.

well there is no medicine that will REALLY cure a social phobia. You kind of have to just work on getting more socialable. Start with your family members, then work on friends, and so on soon you will be over ur social problems. you just have to learn to laugh, smile, talk, share, and trust the people around you. Just try it Medicine doesnt solve everything (but sometimes it helps if ur sick)

People who suffer from depression or social anxiety/phobia feel that way for various reasons. One of many reasons is because there is a DECREASE in SEROTONIN in the body (namely at the area where two nerves come together, aka the “Synaptic Cleft”). Keep in mind that this is one of many reasons of depression and social phobia.

Wouldn’t it then be prudent to find the cause? …To verify that it is truly due to a lack of serotonin at the synapse? Sadly, some MD’s do not test for this before prescription of drugs like Zoloft®.

One reason that people might have a decrease in serotonin levels is because of improper diet and or exercise (namely natural exercise: i.e. - outdoors activities). Perhaps that's why we're seeing more of these problms in the “Nintendo Generation”.

So what is the cause of decreased Serotonin? Well, Zoloft® is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). You see, the end of one nerve can disperse serotonin to the next nerve. There are serotonin receptors on the receiving nerve which are the starts of the nerve’s reaction to serotonin. Then when the reaction is done, serotonin is taken back into the original nerve (reuptake; retrograde nerve flow). An SSRI blocks the reuptake function of the nerve, which means that serotonin is left in the synapse (see diagram below). I have to assume that the people who prescribe such SSRI’s feel that their patients are depressed / anxious due to a decrease in time in which serotonin is brought back into the first nerve (step 4 in diagram below)…or perhaps that there is not enough serotonin at any given time inside the synapse. What does blocking serotonin reuptake do? It does indeed cause an increase of time it takes for the first nerve to reuptake serotonin thereby increasing the amount of serotonin in the synapse, which in turn is responsible for an increase of serotonin stimulation. However, that might be temporary as it is suggested that in many cases, the body starts producing LESS serotonin than before due to this artificial interruption of serotonin reuptake. That produces a false need of the SSRI, which might be great for the pharmaceutical company (especially when multiplied by the dangerously increasing population of depressed individuals) but adverse to the individuals taking the drug.

It is my general concern that many people are taking such SSRI medication that will leave that person dependant and possibly in a situation that is worse than how they started. In America, we live in a land of instant gratification. We want it, and we want it now. Because of this, we sometimes skip steps that are necessary in determining the cause of disease, and we chase symptoms. And I ask you logical people, how is this working? Look around. It’s not just the SSRI’s. Depression, Obesity and Diabetes is now being diagnosed in ages as young as 4. For the baby boomers – do you notice any difference among the current young generation and your generation when you were younger? The pharmaceutical companies capitalized on your generation which really set the stage for domination of ours. And it’s only getting worse. The future generation will be one of artificial immunity, strands of viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that completely ignore antibiotics and which have unstoppable strength. Do you think that the fat pockets of the pharmaceutical companies can afford the best marketers out there? They’re making fools of us folks! Put two and two together, it’s that simple!
