They can both use similar construction. Some dc motors may work as generators and vice versa. An ac synchronous motor the same.

BUT, they are not the same and characteristics are engineered differently depending on use.

A permanent magnet DC motor will generate electricity if turned. The construction of both are very similar to each other.

A free spinning motor reaches a certain RPM depending on the voltage applied. This is because the motor acts like a generator and generates its own voltage that closely matches the applied voltage. It's also the reason that the torque is close to zero at the free-spinning speed. When you apply a mechanical load to the motor, it slows down and increases torque.

Test drive a Prius today. It is how they work. Wheels are motors. Hit the brakes and they become generators. Hve you noticed all the TV commercials show them on level ground?

Armature coil brushes all there is ti them not so with an altenator a gen 12v will run like a motor off a battery
but a motor will not generate power oh well such is life

they are not similar they are identical
