Occasionaly, I would see cops with black stripes, one or more on their badges. I was wondering why this happens, and why would cops wear more than one at a time?

A black band placed across the badge itself represents the death of a fellow officer. The officer wearing the band across his or her badge is doing so in remembrance of a fellow officer, usually one killed in the line of duty. Many NYPD have been wearing them since 9/11

It is a scare tactic . They are saying : If I do something to you ,you will not get my badge number . It is illegal , even when it is occasionally done as a sign of mourning . I have never heard of this practice except when a police officer comes into another state unexpectedly . In that case they might do this to prevent a mix up in Badge numbers . There would be no reason for a bounty hunter to do this except ,as I said before , which is to make an ID difficult , unless there was a particular state law requiring it . Some police depts. have a cloth band that will go around their badge in case of a death in the line of duty . But this is usually limited to those cops within the particular precinct . AND it can not block the badge number . I have not heard of a (major) police dept. , within the past 20 years ,with the badge numbers on the back . Although in times previous many Law Enforcement Badges had no numbers at all . In NYC I can remeber at least 3 or 4 times officers were accused of putting electrical tapeover their badge numbers during riot control , for the purpose of not being identified .

Black stripes across a badge indicates that an officer has recently fallen. It is a mark of respect to a police officer who has paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep the rest of us safe and able to live in a society of law.

Usually when you see a uniformed police officer with a black "mourning Band" on their badge, it signifies that an officer in their department was killed in the line of duty. I have not seen more than one mourning band worn at one time.

They are called mourning bands. When a peace officer dies in the line of duty, officers would wear mourning bands until after the funeral.
