We adopted a pit today to add to our family and I am looking into what will be the best thing to walk the new fur baby with. Being a Greyhound owner I am very fond of a martingale collar, I HATE choke collars so do not even mention them. But I was wondering if any other pit owners have a favorite harness, collar or like that they use.

Choke chains do not hurt if used right...i'm not going to bother telling u how to use one. fewer dogs would be at shelters if more ppl used them right...thats what they use in dog shows so they can't be so bad...

U never leave a choke chain on our dog when not home...thats just silly

All dogs are different. I would go to Petsmart and try out a Gentle Leader or a Comfort Ease head collar first. Some dogs are fine with it and others aren't. Next, I would try the Holt harness or one of the other no pull harnesses. You might have to try them all out to see what works best. Be sure to ask a trainer there to help you put them on and explain each of them to you. The nice thing with Petsmart is you're not stuck with anything. If you're not happy with it, you can return it or trade it in for something else. Thanks for trying one of these ways first. The majority of dogs do not have to go to the choker or prong collar. I'm not a big fan of either of them. I have seen the majority of dogs do great with one of the head collars or harnesses. Every once in a great while, you might have a dog that has to go the choker or pincher route. If used properly, it's decent .(Again, a very small amount of dogs have to use these. ) There are a good amount of people who go the choker or pincher collar route first because they want to stick to the old ways and aren't into trying something new that might be better. Also, a lot of people go this route first because they do not have the right kind of patience to train a dog. The idea of any training aide though is just that, it's a training aide. You still have to work with the dog not pulling and you eventually wean them off of it. If you do not wean them off of it, they aren't really trained to walk well. Especially with the choker or pincher, they just walk right because they don't want to get choked or hurt.

I have a pit, and use an "easy lead", I think its called. Its a harness that goes around the head and muzzel, and you tie the leash to the muzzle part. If the dog pulls, his head gets pulled to his chest, which is uncomfortable, and so he doesn't pull. It works great, and teaches them to walk without pulling. Also, doesnt hurt the dog in any way. You can buy them at Petsmart or Petco. I would never use anything else, it works so good!

we have one of those harness thing that you can adjust around her chest and then you clip the lead on to that and it is all in the shoulder / chest area, her strongest part of her body and absolutely NOTHING around her neck we just have her nice collar there.

what ever you do please go for the slightly dearer items as we have been left holding the flipping lead and part of the collar as she has broke free and gone after something that she was not happy about, those plastic ones are just not up to it strength wise against the strength of the pits chest.

the ones I am on about are easily available in petsmart, just pay for the harness there and get the lead with the metal clip at walmart [much cheaper] in a matching colour.

good luck and enjoy

I have a pit bull. I walk him with just a regular harness. He wears a chock collar for his tags, etc. I would never put the leash on the choke, it is not healthy for them. He walks well with the harness I purchased at Pet Smart....they actually helped me pick it out because he is about 90 pounds and very muscular. I hate to see these so called "thugs" walking their pits on those tow chains. It makes me sick. Have fun with your new baby....I know I love mine.

I use a regular collar for my American Staffordshire, and he doesn't choke himself because he was taught manners early on! Also, there is nothing wrong with"training" aka "choke" collars if used properly!

A British style slip lead.

since pitbulls tend to be more dominating and headstrong, i would recommend, hands down, a halti collar or gentle leader. they control their head and reduce pull force down to next to nothing. it will give you much much more control over him than any harness or collar. please look into one. it worked wonders on my dog.
