My uncle had scoliosis surgery to have the rod attached to his spine. He was 14 I believe and that was a long time ago. He is in his mid-40's now and is still fine. The worst part was having to be in a cast for a while after surgery.

When I was 11 they said I was going to have to have the surgery (I have a double curve). My mom took me to a different orthopedic surgeon for a second opinion. He said I didn't need surgery and they monitored me for a while. I did wind up in a brace for 2 1/2 years (12-14 1/2) but that was it. And that was only after my curves reached 23 degrees (upper curve) and 19 degrees (lower curve). I am was fine and still am. I do have occasional back problems but those are from flipping a car when I was 19 and giving birth to a 10 lb, 7 oz child NOT from the brace.

The prospect of surgery can be scary. What they usually do though is have you asleep before you go into the operating room so getting the IV started is usually the scariest thing you would be awake for. Chances are you will not need surgery, it is very rare they do the surgery and the options they have for scoliosis surgery now are worlds above what they had been in the past. If a doctor says he feels you need surgery just be sure to get a second opinion. I know about a dozen people who have worn a brace (including myself), but I have only ever in my life met one who had the surgery.

I am 19 and just had scoliosis surgery 2 months ago. I got to the hospital early, they checked me in and everything. They had me change, and took two little tubes of blood. The anaesthesiologist came and talked to me. I was wheeled down to another room and they put my IV in, my mom was allowed to be there up until I went to the operating room. When I got there, the anaesthesiologist came back and asked if I had a dream picked out, and I fell asleep. When i woke up I was told to wiggle my toes and asked how I was feeling. I slept a lot the first couple days. But they got me up the day after my surgery and had me walk. I really don't remember too much of being in the hospital, they keep you pretty medicated. I am doing good now. It's been 2 months. I still can't bend over, and I cannot lift over 5 pounds for 4 more months. But I'm walking and sitting and driving and all that. I would be glad to talk more about this with you if you want. (I don't want to take up a bunch of space) You can e-mail me at IrishRose1987@yahoo.com.

If you did need the surgery, you should not worry too much. You should be excited because the surgeon would fix whatever bothering u now. You would go to the surgery room of course and they would put u asleep. You wouldnt even know when they did it. Don't worry everything would be okay. I've had my knee surgery and I was scared then they put me asleep after that I woke up 2 hrs after the surgery was done. I did not even know when they did it and how. I know it's gonna be different with urs but they would put u asleep, so dont worry everythng would be okay. Good luck and don't drink or eat 14 hrs before the surgery time :)
