You gain points by answering questions. You lose points by asking questions. Points are like money. You have to pay to ask and you get paid for answering.

Answer questions to earn point. Make the answer the best that you can and you hopefully get chosen as best answer. If your answer is chosen as the best, then you get 10 points. If you ask a question, it takes points away.
You can look in someone's profile to see what kind of questions they like to answer and also what kind of questions they like to ask. You can tell by how many points a person gets how knowledgable they are about a subject.
