If you format it then you erase everything from the Hard Drive. So, be sure you have OS software to reinstall your OS. When you boot press Delete, F1 whatever it say to enter BIOS and click on BOOT. Set the CD Drive as first BOOT. Put your OS CD into the drive and turn it off. Then turn it on and follow the instructions to Format and Re-install your OS. Make sure you have your Key Code as it will ask for this. Sometimes it on a little sticker somewhere on the outside of the computer.

You cannot format the active partition in safe mode. That is, you cant format your (entire) hard drive while running windows. You must format before loading the operating system, and one way is to use the Windows Operating System CD (Win2000/XP/Vista), and follow the directions to reformat.

Open My Computer, right click the A: drive and click Format.
3. In the Format window, check Create an MS-DOS startup disk.
4. Click Start
restart comp to floppy and type in format c: /FS:NTFS /X

You have to have a boot CD or boot floppy disk to format the C: drive.

Are you using Windows XP? Insert your original disk and it will boot, follow instructions. You will lose everything on your hdd if you haven't or can't back it up.
