Why would you have them backstage the entire time? My girls watch the other dancers until a few songs before they go on. That time is spent lining everyone up. Then whoever has volunteered to supervise, takes the girls to the stage and is there to greet them when they get off stage. They then return to the audience to watch the other dancers. If you're girls are planning on being backstage for 4 hours, you need to think about switching schools, that's nuts. Part of a good dance education is being able to see the other performances.
Good luck :)

I would not go for bringing hair supplies and make-up. Only because, the mothers might not want them to have lip stick or gloss on their lips. I would bring the dvd player with some movies. (Maybe like the wizard of oz, disney princesses, or angalina the ballarina) But that will only be for about 2 hours. then after the movies, I would tell them to show me their dance and then have the girls say what their fav dance move is. that should kill a half-hour to an hour. Then for the last hour I would get a couple stories about dancers. So you can read to them. and get some little bottles of water, whole grain snacks, suger free gummi snacks. Those arn't messy at all. maybe you could bring a little bottles of perfumes not too strong. just soft n sweet. and some cady for after the dance...HTH!!!!!!

I think you answered your own question when you said you're bringing a portable DVD player. Now all you have to do is choose the right movie.

anything using scissors and no glue might work--you could try origami--making things out of paper...and sticker books--writing letters...making cards for family members...other than that the beading and the movies should do it...

If they are young playdoh is usually pretty good. The Barbie thing is good, well as long as they don't fight over them.
