My favorite (and I think it has the best food, far better than the over-priced fancy well-known restaurants) is Del Valle on Tenth Avenue and 48th Street. The owners/cooks are from Puebla (near Mexico City), so the style of cooking is different from most of the New York Mexican restaurants. The place is very plain (it's very, very clean) and it's out of the way. They have a very extensive, very inexpensive menu. The most expensive dish they have is seafood soup (which is loaded with shrimp, crab, clams, mussels, fish) is $14; there are half a dozen shrimp dishes - a very large serving of shrimp - I like the garlic shrimp - my husband likes the shrimp Vera Cruz (too spicy for me) comes with salad or rice and beans and hot homemade tortillas - $11. Most appetizers are less than $3. They do wonderful moles and an excellent pipian sauce. We go elsewhere for dessert.

The best Mexican restaurant is actually a series of three restaurants called Rosa Mexicana. The original is on First ave in the 50's, the second is 62nd & Columbus, the third one is brand new and is downtown, but not sure where. Food is incredble and the best guacmole, made at the table.
