They don't convert anything. They create AC electricity by being spun by some outside power source like water pressure, gas or diesel engine, wind turbine, RVs, hand cranks, power plants, dams, atomic energy, and stuff like that.
~An alternator on cars actually produces AC voltage and convert AC into DC by use of diodes.
Or, they convert rotary motion into electricity if you wanted to know that. OK?............OK.
