We have seen everything from making them all legal to building a fence. What is the best way to solve this problem.

Build the fence. Man the border. Fix the loophole in the anchor baby ammendment. No more free anything without proof of citizenship or other legal document saying they have the right to be here. Fine and jail the employers. English only and stop this bi-lingual business. Hire more people to handle the people who have come here legally and are patiently waiting as well as a more concentrated effort for actual follow-ups on visas. Start enforcing housing codes and start fining slum lords who are renting to them. When the "draw" is no longer easy....many will leave on their own. Others can be deported. Simply enforcing our laws........

Those that are good people could go back willingly and start filing the proper way or maybe there could be a means to work with an employer and start some process with guest worker and see where things go from there. Maybe some arrangements for people who are married to a citizen. But never ever a blanket amnesty.

There also needs to be a major crackdown on these race crimes by latinos since they are targeting whites and blacks and enough is enough. It's rampent in certain neighborhoods and schools and this has to stop. They need to learn this hate talk is a crime ,and they know it ,and it's time this turning the other cheek stuff stops. (like good ole Victor N) No one is wanting harm to illegals......but his type of hate talk is 100% total racism. Every sign holder saying "kill the gringo" should be charged. Every "we're taking our land back" group or "we are taking over" needs to charged with terrorism. It's not a joke and this type of threat and harrassment has to stop. Or take it back to Mexico coz I've had enough of it. People need to learn if they're here there's a certain amount of civil behavior expected.

STOP NAFTA and neoliberalism.

Since 1982 when Mexico and Latin America went through the debt crisis they were forced to undergo "structural adjustment policies" since then immigration has increased, with the sharpest increases since NAFTA went into effect. NAFTA is the institutionalization of these "structural adjustment policies.

Structural adjustment was promoted in the name of "helping" countries come out of debt and develop, hence the term "developing countries." Yet all the evidence in the region shows that trade agreements like NAFTA, which the US promotes, do not work to develop the nations much less stop undocumented immigration.

NAFTA was promoted as a way to curb immigration but this will never happen because it is designed to benefit corporate interests above human interests. So the rich get richer in both countries (see Caslos Slim 3rd Richest man in the world and he is Mexian) and their wealth does not trickle down.

Closing the border and strictly enforcing laws is like trying to put your finger on a leak in your millioon dollar yacht. It will not work. The problem is deeply structural.

Also migrants from Mexico used to travel in and out of this country much more freely; they would work and then leave. But since adopting an enforcemnet only apporach, it prooves more costly to leave and return. So, feeling that they must stay, they bring their entire families whenever possible.

The perception is created that they strain local resources and vile anti immgrant sentiment is reborn.

If you do not like this situation, stop scapegoating people, hold the governments of Mexico and the United States of America accountable. Work to stop NAFTA, neoliberalism, the WTO, the World Bank, the IMF, and the other so called international financial institutions.

Immigration is the least important problem that this country has, but to answer the question: Enforce existing laws. So long as there are employers willing to hire illegals, people will come. You have to start fixing the problem with the borders of this country first.

Well since America was built by immigrants....it is highly unlikely that they will leave from something they created. Not to mention, US bringing people in by boat, WHEN THEY NEEDED THEM, to pick cotton and build the US. and now what they want to send workers back now that their finished with them. I'll tell you how it can be fixed. Take an immigrant, photograph them, ID them, finger print them, DNA them, give the S.S. and keep it all on file. This whole stupid testing to become a citizen is BS because my mexican friend was valedictorian at our high school and knows more than my white friend, American citizen, yet doesn't even know what the stars strips colors are on the flag or president, legislative branch etc. Some americans can't even pass that test but mexicans and immigrants have to? Ha. It's just one race trying to rule the world and minorities just keep getting kicked around like a ball. First blacks, then mexicans, immigrants, asians, then blacks again. By the way, you test immigrants you test everyone! and Soccerho is just stupid she's probably and immigrant and doesn't know.

What have been done, so far, are merely palliative measures. These are not really intended to solve the problem but more like to curb it...before it really gets bigger than all of us!

Unfortunately, there's no panacea for this problem. For as long as dire poverty, religious persecution, government persecution and other societal ills in underdeveloped countries exist, the lure of Uncle Sam would always be there.

It all goes back to the old days when America opened its doors - wide open - to everyone. Somehow, the "come to America" mentality stuck!

The extreme solution would to close our doors permanently - nobody comes in, nobody goes out - ala Great Wall of China! We all know this is not going to happen. So ---------

It all boils down to this. Why would any illegal be worried about coming over here illegally? Whats the worst thing that happens when they do get caught? They get deported and vow they will be back tomorrow. And back they come. You deport them and back they come, vicious circle. Maybe they shoot be shot with a stun gun all the way back to the border.
Then you have the corrupt people in our government that are benefiting from this, anyone of them that talks amnesty should be voted out next election. I fear it will be to late by then because Kennedy is pushing hard for it.

enforce the current laws. crack down.

but i think that the ones who've been living here for so many years should get a chance, *a chance* to become legal.
pay a fine, return the taxes you owe to the gov, take the citizenship test. and learn english.
all the other immigrants had to learn english, why cant illegal immigrants?

My Grandparents are all for just shooting them.

But it's a good question.

We need stricter pentalties for illegal immigrants. And maybe the United States and Mexico and work together on it.

But no matter, what fence or no fence illegal immigrants will always come here.

Firstly, we have to enforce existing laws. Secondly, we have to make it economically unattractive for employers to use cheap, illegal labor. this is not as bad as it sounds. Stop using illegals and they go home. All 12 million of them, with any luck. Offer jobs to the 12 million unemployed (how fortunate). The 12 million unemployed have money to spend. They spend it in America rather than shipping it out abroad for free courtesy of Bank of Mex...I mean America. So the businesses that have to pay higher wages make more money because people buy more goods. Employers win (in the long run). Workers win. Because they both win, the government collects more tax and wins too.

Somebody please explain to me the flaw in this argument.
